“What worked for Me”– Psalm 91: The Proven Vaccine for Fear

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in Whom I trust’” –Psalm 91:1-2.

Psalm 91 is one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible—one that is seldom overlooked.  This particular psalm contains some of the richest words of wisdom and hope. It has transformed millions of lives around the world, and has the unlimited power to bless the lives of all who believe.  We can turn to this psalm both in times of uncertainty and hardship as well as in times of blessing and abundance. Having it committed to memory is an added bonus. While it would take days to sift through the depth of every verse, we can certainly look at some of the highlights.

Psalm 91:4-5: “He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day.”

Can you imagine what it would be like to live without fear and worry?  Today, we may not be stalked by insidious enemies like the author of this psalm. But there are plenty of other things that constantly pursue us and make us feel anxious. Here, we see that when we trust in God, we can let go of any and all fear.

Psalm 91: 9-10: “Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place — the Most High, Who is my refuge — no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague [will] come near your tent.”

In the middle of tribulation, we can often feel hopeless and without help. But according to these verses, we have the divine protection of God Himself. This doesn’t mean that nothing bad will ever happen to us (John 16:33). But it does mean that in the end, none of these things will overtake us. God will give us the strength to overcome every trial, and He will make all things work together for our good.

Psalm 91:15: “When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.”

This verse is a perfect description of God’s unwavering love for us. When we call to Him, He hears us. He will not abandon us. He does not delight in our pain; He delights in rescuing us and restoring us. If you ever feel distant from God, may this verse remind you that He is much closer to you than you think. He is always near, and always waiting for you to cast your cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7).

Psalm 91 is a beautiful reminder of all of God’s promises toward us. He is always faithful. Since the beginning of time, He has kept His word. So when He tells us that we don’t have to fear, that He will protect us from evil, and that He will rescue us from trouble, we can believe Him. Once we truly trust that God is enough for us in every situation, we stop worrying, stop despairing, and simply rest in His goodness.  The sooner we do–the sooner we submit and abide in His unfailing promises–the sooner we’ll find divine Peace in our everyday lives…regardless of circumstance.
