3 Reasons The Psalms are Critical in Times Like These

Your Word, Lord, stands forever; it is firm as the Heavens. Psalm 119:89

3 Reasons The Psalms are Critical in Times Like These

There is a lot of emphasis in both the media and medical circles right now about the importance of taking care of our physical health. Unfortunately, however, they rarely talk about the importance of overall balance between our physical and spiritual health. If it is really “good health” we are after, the two are very much interconnected. If we are in great physical health for example, but spiritually down or weak, our emotional and psychological health will suffer and, ultimately, we will be too weak to keep up with our physical health. Physical health is only sustainable when everything else within us is in harmony. The point is, our physical and spiritual health must be in balance for us to feel good from the inside out.

More than anything else in life, our relationship with the Lord is most important. Not only in this life but for all eternity. It is of particular importance in the “here and now” because of our cultural age of unceasing uncertainty, confusion, fear and unrest. Thankfully, God has given us an incredible resource to help strengthen and maintain our faith in difficult times. Within the Bible, the Book of Psalms is particularly powerful for strengthening faith and prayer. In fact, the Psalms are regarded as one of the most powerful Books of all time.

While there is far too much to cover in a single article about all the benefits of the Psalms, here are 3 Reasons The Psalms are Critical in Times Like These:

1.) The Psalms remind us of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness

Psalm 91:4: “He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”

Psalm 91 is an incredibly comforting passage to read when you are feeling lost or afraid. Even though the world may rage around us, when we are strong in faith, we have nothing to fear. We have God’s divine protection and are promised to find safety under His wings. He is faithful to shelter you from every wordly threat and every harmful work of Satan, and will not allow you to be overtaken by the troubles of this world. Your job is to trust Him. Build up that trust today by prayerfully reading Psalm 91.

2.) The Psalms give us hope in our suffering

Psalm 119:50: “This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your promise gives me life.”

When disaster strikes, we do not have to despair. We have great hope in the Lord’s unfailing promises. All throughout Scripture, we read that God promises to bless us, restore us, and give us eternal life. These promises far outweigh any affliction we are currently going through in this life. Our faith is exactly why we can endure suffering with hope, joy and even peace — because we know that all temporary pain is working to produce a glory beyond all compare.

3.) The Psalms remind us where our help comes from

Psalm 73:26: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Sometimes we simply need to be reminded that we are only human. On a daily basis we will make mistakes, mess up, and find ourselves in situations where we are unsure of what to say or do. The good news is that it is not up to us to rescue ourselves. The Lord is our guide, our strength, and our Light through uncertainty. His power (not ours) is more than sufficient to make up for any and all of our weaknesses. So while we may be living through a time of great uncertainty, this Psalm and all the Psalms are here to remind us that we are not alone. God is with us; actively pursuing, protecting, and empowering us to rise above tribulation and to remain balanced in faith.

In an era of seemingly endless negativity and pessimism, what we need most is the life and peace giving Word of God. Without it, we will quickly be sucked into the energy-draining and depleting whirlwind around us. But with it, we have the greatest offensive weapon known to man. And that is why the Book of Psalms are critical in times like these. So today, turn off the news and dive into the Psalms vast array of promises. Trust me friend, your heart, mind, body and soul will thank you. Not just today, but forever.

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” –2 Timothy 3:16-17.
