Psalm of the Day

Blessed Is The One Who Does Not Walk With The Wicked – Psalm 1:1

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers…

Reflection

The very first verse in the Book of Psalms states matter-of-factly: “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers…” (Ps. 1:1). Being that this is the opening message of the Book of Psalms, it must be important. And indeed it is. That begs the question: Who is considered wicked? While our thoughts often jump to extreme cases of evil, the biblical description of a wicked person is one who does not love and respect the Lord. Even one who does not know Him is considered wicked because, according to the Word of God, one who does not know the Lord (or has chosen not to know Him) is driven by the desires of the flesh and, thus, knowingly or unknowingly, works against God … hence, wicked.

While the God-fearing (children of God) are not considered “wicked,” it is still important for us to examine our own conscience instead of pointing the finger at our neighbor. After all, since getting out of bed this morning, there’s a good chance we have already fallen short of the will of God. In other words, we have our own work to do. We, too, are “works in progress” and, therefore, must remain focused on our own spiritual progression (Phil. 3:12-14).

The second verse of this psalm reads: “…but [blessed is the one] whose delight is in the Law of the Lord, and who meditates on His Law day and night.” Simply put, the “blessed” — those blessed by God — are not only careful about the company they keep (as bad company will corrupt good character), they make it a priority to keep God at the center of their lives all day long. Make no mistake, there is nothing greater in this life than when God comes in to bless it. We want that blessing! And obeying God’s Commands — His divine Wisdom — is the way to get it.

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers…”Psalm 1:1.

Prayer

Lord God, it is easy to become like those we spend a lot of time with; to lose our way and become like the world instead of more like You. It is also much easier to point the finger at other people rather than to change ourselves in accordance with Your will. Please help us today to guard our hearts and minds, allowing our words and actions to become better reflections of Your love and grace. Give us the desire and fortitude to delight in Your Law all the day long; help us to grow in a state of holiness. Thank You for having patience with us as we strive to live lives that edify and glorify Your Name. We pray this all in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Amen.
