God Gives The Greatest Harvests – Psalm 4:7

You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.

Reflection

This world thrives on comparisons. It will do its best to convince you to measure your life to the lives of others. We are bombarded by sights, sounds and smells made to engage our senses and lead our minds to thoughts of envy, pride and lust. Commercials will tempt us to covet what we do not have. Magazines will convince us to compare our bodies, beauty or fashion sense to that of air-brushed personas of someone else. Social media is filled with pictures of luxurious vacations, big houses, celebrations and greater achievements. If we are not careful, firmly rooted in the Word of God and aware of the real blessing of storing up treasures in Heaven (rather than on earth), the strong winds of competitiveness will quickly rob us of our peace, joy, and of eternal Truths (Matt. 6:19-21).

All throughout Scripture we are warned not to covet what others have. We are told that we have been made perfect by the Almighty hand of God, and that we are to trust in His divine Providence. To covet what others have is to tell God that He made a mistake. That He should have done something more. This mindset not only holds us back and limits the blessings of God, but we could also miss out on the biggest opportunity to prove our faith in the crucible of temptation!

Take a moment today and anchor yourself in the pure joy of what you have through Christ. While it is very good to be happy for others’ success, don’t forget to overflow with joy for yourself knowing that, through grace, you are an heir of the highest King. An heir to eternal paradise! There is so much to be grateful for so, like the Psalmist, praise God for giving you an even greater joy than the most “abundant of harvests and the most extravagant of wines.”

“You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine” –Psalm 4:7.

Prayer

Lord, give us pure joy today as we face the many comparisons the world will throw at us. Help us to be fully grounded in who You say we are; and to rest in Your eternal love and perfection. It is in Your good and holy Name we pray, Amen.
