The Lord Receives the Forsaken – Psalm 27:10

Though my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will receive me.

Reflection

The word “forsaken” means to be abandoned. While today’s psalm speaks to an experience of abandonment by earthly parents, abandonment can reveal itself many different ways and through many different relationships. The experience of being abandoned is unfortunately very common in our modern-day world. Maybe you have been hurt by one or both of your parents. Or perhaps you’ve been hurt by someone else you cared for. Regardless of who or what caused the pain, it takes a good amount of love to heal the wounds of being forsaken and rejected.

If this has been your experience, first know that you are not alone. Millions of others around the world (including the psalmist!) can relate to your pain. Second, and most important, Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior Himself, relates to what you are going through. Our Lord experienced the very worst kind of abandonment and rejection even up until His death on the Cross! He knows first-hand what we will experience by people in this life; and for every one of your tears, for every sigh of grief or anguish, the Great Healer stands beside you.

Jesus is calling you today to bring your broken heart to the foot of the Cross. He knows exactly who you need (and do not need) in your life, and how to best protect you. While we may not always understand why certain things happen to us, God does. He knows the reason for everything. And rest assured, He works all things for good for those who love Him (Rom. 8:28). So today, don’t spend too much time trying and make sense of why this or that happened (after all, some things are not for us to know or understand this side of Heaven). Instead, have faith! Believe that Jesus Christ knows who and what is best for you. If you trust Him with your heart (your life!), you will be healed.

“According to your faith, let it be done unto you” (Matt. 9:29).

Prayer

Lord, we know that You also grieve when relationships don’t fulfill Your plan of unconditional love. Meet us today in the space of feeling lost or abandoned and hold us close to Your Sacred Heart. Lead the way forward to our brightest days; to the path that You have perfectly set before us. Help us to fix our eyes solely on You and to abandon our will for Yours. We love You, we trust You, and we pray that Your will always be done. It is in Your good and holy Name we pray, Amen.
