Relationships Flourish When God is First–1 John 5:1-2

“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the Father loves also [those] begotten by Him. In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey His commandments” –1 John 5:1-2.

Do you know what blesses your relationships more than anything else? Keeping God first. When we keep God first, everything in life takes on a whole new meaning and deeper purpose. Everything we do becomes an instrument by which we live out our love for Him – placing Him at the center of our relationships – rather than ourselves.

Some people worry that if they place God first, making Him their greatest delight, their relationships will somehow suffer. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. The truth is (and studies show), that relationships (particularly familial ones; i.e. marriage) flourish when one draws closer to God. Think of it this way: God is the One who created our relationships. He has the ability to love our loved ones infinitely more than we ever could. And He understands more than anyone what our relationships need. So when we open our heart to Him and seek Him first, He guides us on how to better love.

As you abide in Christ’s love, seeking Him first, the love you have for your loved ones today will increase exponentially. Taking the Lord’s love in daily (and expressing it back to Him) will fulfill you in ways others cannot and thus, you will be able to radiate that love back to others. Over time, this will enable you to cherish the people closest to you like never before. The closer we get to Him, the more we will be like Him, think like Him, act like Him, and passionately love others like Him.

Read 1 John 4:19-21. Look at how God’s Word repeatedly exhorts us to love others. May God bless you in love and happiness for your obedience.
