How You Know if You’re Doing God’s Will –By John Harrell
Sometimes we toss God’s will around like it’s a commodity. When a tragedy happens, we rationalize it as “God’s will.” We inject it into casual conversation: “God willing, I will be there.” We close our prayers, “Your will be done.” But let me ask you, the reader, a very serious question: Do you want God’s will in your life? Do you really want it?
I ask you the question partly for myself. When I am feeling rebellious (most of the time), I run the risk of missing what God has in store for me, where He might be trying to lead me. Ego and self-sufficiency are dangerous traps.
When I consider God’s will for my life, why does my mind immediately start thinking about all the things I don’t want to do? I talk a good game, but when you get down to it, my desire is not to sell everything I own, give the money to the charities I support and go to India to do missionary work. I ask God to make me uncomfortable, to get me out of my comfort zone so I can grow. But this missionary thing is not what I have in mind.
If God spoke to me the way He spoke to Moses at the burning bush, I want to believe I would listen and willingly do what was asked of me. But would I? Moses argued with God, telling Him that He had chosen the wrong guy. What makes me think I would be any different? I see things through human eyes, just like Moses, just like the disciples, and just like Noah. Yet, the reason we talk about these people today is because they risked everything and trusted God.
I want the kind of trust in God that if He asked me to do something, anything, I would immediately say YES and not think twice about it. I know God will not set me up to fail. In fact, when I am doing His will, I cannot fail. He doesn’t fail. Faithfully doing God’s will is always our greatest challenge. The evil one who is at work in the spiritual realm will throw every roadblock imaginable at me. Satan wants me to quit. God wants me to persevere, to win.
When you are doing the will of God, you will know it in your heart. It just feels right. And you know you are on the right path because the spiritual attack will be relentless, sometimes unbearable. But fear not, you have the God of the universe on your side, silencing your enemy, helping you. Don’t quit. Just keep going…
