In You, Lord, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in Your righteousness rescue me …
Psalm 31
The Special Psalms Jesus Christ Himself Prayed
Did you know that Jesus Himself prayed the Psalms? The Psalms were the most common prayer of Jesus in the New Testament who, as many theologians and saints have claimed, loved singing them with His disciples. In one instance, the Gospel reports how Jesus and the disciples left the Last Supper singing the psalms on their way to Gethsemane, “Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives” (Matt 26:30). From the Cross, Jesus prayed Psalm 22, “My God, my God why have You forsaken Me” (Matt 27:46) and from Psalm 31, “Into Thine hands I commend My Spirit” (Lk 23:46).
Simply put, Jesus prayed the Psalms in both good and not-so-good times; and therefore we should too.
About the Psalms
There are 150 Psalms in total and many of our earliest brothers and sisters knew and recited them by heart. They did this because this is one of their primary purposes; they (the Psalms) are given to us for the purpose of prayer — to not only strengthen the words we speak in prayer but to be used also as an offensive weapon against the principle(s) of darkness. Though God used human instruments to hold the pen, God is the true Author of the Psalms. Thus, the pray-er who prays them speaks to God with the very words He gave to us — and that is powerful.
In a way, we can think of the Psalms as a school of prayer. They aren’t our prayers, but rather taught to us as the prayer of Jesus Christ Himself. They are the chosen prayers for His Church and for the whole world to cherish, recite, pray, meditate on, and contemplate.

The Special Psalms Jesus Christ Himself Prayed
Psalm 22 [abridged]
*My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?
Far from my help are the words of my groaning.
My God, I cry out by day, but You do not answer;
and by night, but I have no rest.
Yet You are holy,
You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
In You our fathers trusted;
they trusted and You rescued them.
To You they cried out and they fled to safety;
in You they trusted and were not disappointed.
Do not be far from me, for trouble is near;
for there is no one to help…
*They pierced my hands and my feet.
I can count all my bones.
They look, they stare at me;
they divide my garments among them,
and they cast lots for my clothing.
But You, Lord, do not be far away;
You who are my help, hurry to my assistance.
I will proclaim Your name to my brothers;
in the midst of the assembly I will praise You.
You who fear the Lord, praise Him;
all you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,
for He has not despised nor scorned the suffering of the afflicted;
nor has He hidden His face from him;
but when he cried to Him for help, He heard.
From You comes my praise in the great assembly;
I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him.
The afflicted will eat and be satisfied;
those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
May your heart live forever!
All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
And all the families of the nations will worship before You.
For the kingdom is the Lord’s
and He rules over the nations.
All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,
all those who go down to the dust will kneel before Him,
even he who cannot keep his soul alive.
A posterity will serve Him;
it will be told of the Lord to the coming generation.
They will come and will declare His righteousness
to a people who will be born, that He has performed it.
Psalm 31
In You, Lord, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in Your righteousness rescue me.
Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly;
be a rock of strength for me,
a stronghold to save me.
For You are my rock and my fortress;
for the sake of Your name You will lead me and guide me.
You will pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me,
for You are my strength.
*Into Your hand I entrust my spirit;
You have redeemed me, Lord, God of truth.
I hate those who devote themselves to worthless idols,
but I trust in the Lord.
I will rejoice and be glad in Your faithfulness,
because You have seen my misery;
You have known the troubles of my soul,
and You have not handed me over to the enemy;
You have set my feet in a large place.
Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am in distress;
my eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body too.
For my life is spent with sorrow
and my years with sighing;
my strength has failed because of my guilt,
and my body has wasted away.
Because of all my adversaries, I have become a disgrace,
especially to my neighbors,
and an object of dread to my acquaintances;
those who see me in the street flee from me.
I am forgotten like a dead person, out of mind;
I am like a broken vessel.
For I have heard the slander of many,
terror is on every side;
while they took counsel together against me,
they schemed to take away my life.
But as for me, I trust in You, Lord,
I say, “You are my God.”
My times are in Your hand;
rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from those who persecute me.
Make Your face shine upon Your servant;
save me in Your faithfulness.
Let me not be put to shame, Lord, for I call upon You;
let the wicked be put to shame, let them be silent in Sheol.
Let the lying lips be speechless,
which speak arrogantly against the righteous
with pride and contempt.
How great is Your goodness,
which You have stored up for those who fear You,
which You have performed for those who take refuge in You,
before the sons of mankind!
You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of mankind;
You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.
Blessed be the Lord,
for He has shown His marvelous faithfulness to me in a besieged city.
As for me, I said in my alarm,
“I am cut off from Your eyes”;
nevertheless You heard the sound of my pleadings
when I called to You for help.
Love the Lord, all His godly ones!
The Lord watches over the faithful
but fully repays the one who acts arrogantly.
Be strong and let your heart take courage,
all you who wait for the Lord.
Psalm 110 [abridged]
*The Lord says to my Lord:
“Sit at My right hand
until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”
The Lord will stretch out Your strong scepter from Zion, saying,
“Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
Your people will volunteer freely on the day of Your power;
in holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
Your youth are to You as the dew.
The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,
*“You are a priest forever
according to the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord is at Your right hand;
He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath.
He will judge among the nations,
He will fill them with corpses,
He will shatter the chief men over a broad country.
He will drink from the brook by the wayside;
Therefore He will lift up His head.
Psalm 118 [abridged]
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His mercy is everlasting.
Let Israel say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”|
Oh let the house of Aaron say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”
Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His mercy is everlasting.”
From my distress I called upon the Lord;
the Lord answered me and put me in an open space.
The Lord is for me; I will not fear;
what can man do to me?
The Lord is for me among those who help me;
therefore I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in people.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in noblemen.
The Lord is my strength and song,
and He has become my salvation.
The sound of joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous;
the right hand of the Lord performs valiantly.
The right hand of the Lord is exalted;
the right hand of the Lord performs valiantly.
I will not die, but live,
and tell of the works of the Lord.
Open the gates of righteousness to me;
I will enter through them, I will give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord;
The righteous will enter through it.
I will give thanks to You, for You have answered me,
and You have become my salvation.
A stone which the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.
This came about from the Lord;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day which the Lord has made;
let’s rejoice and be glad in it.
Please, O Lord, do save us;
please, O Lord, do send prosperity!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord;
we have blessed you from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is God, and He has given us light;
bind the festival sacrifice to the horns of the altar with cords.
You are my God, and I give thanks to You;
You are my God, I exalt You.
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
for His mercy is everlasting.
May God bless you mightily for praying as He did!
