… the Lord sustains me.
Psalm 3:5
Fear Not! The Lord Will Sustain You – Psalm 3:5
I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
Reflection
Let this truth of our Lord give you peace: In this world, there will be trouble (Jn 16:33). It sounds counterintuitive doesn’t it? If we are told there is going to be trouble, how can we have peace? But the answer is simple. Truth, real Truth, will always end up giving us peace in the end … because the Word of God always and without fail produces a peace that transcends human understanding (Phil 4:6).
Jesus warned us of trouble so that when trouble came we would not be alarmed. Rather, we would expect it to come and when it did … we would trust in Him. This is why Jesus proclaimed, “I am the Truth, the Way and the Life (Jn 14:6). He wanted us to know that with Him there is nothing to fear. He is always with us, and if He is with us who dare be against us? (Rom 8:31)
The psalmist had every reason to fear in his day, too. He was constantly on the run for his life. But even though his life was at risk, he was able to profess: “I lay down and slept … [and] I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.” At the end of the day, the psalmist could rest in peace because he believed what the Lord promised him … that He was with him and would always sustain him.
So as we walk in our own times of trouble (Ps 23:4), let us do as the psalmist did and believe in God and His Word — trusting that He is always with us and will see us through. You are a Child of God, friend, an heir to the eternal Throne; the head and not the tail (Dt 28:13); the Victor, not the victim (1 Cor 15:57). So lean into the promises of your Heavenly Father and fear not! In these moments when you feel as though you have no control, trust in the One who does. The one who loves you, protects you, and calls you by name (Is 43:1-2).
Prayer
Lord, today we are facing a period of unknown, unrest and uncertainty. Help us to find true rest in the knowledge that You will sustain us and protect us with a fierce and mighty right hand. As we seek to draw near to You Lord, help us to not only hear Your truth … but to believe in it and to live it out in our lives. Equip us to be the courageous and faithful warriors You have called; fill us with Your Light so we can in return be the Light of the world. It is in Your good and Holy Name we pray, Amen.
