Great is our Lord, vast in power,

Reflection

One of the biggest mistakes mankind can make is to believe that they are “all-powerful and wise”; in essence, making themselves “like unto God”: “Who among is like You, Lord? Who is like You — majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?” (Ex. 15:11) Human beings may be “powerful and wise” in relation to the confines of the finite human body and person. But in comparison with an eternal and Almighty God … there simply is no comparison.

Think in the most simplistic of terms for a moment. Men cannot, for example, tell the future. In fact, we don’t even know what will happen tonight let alone tomorrow. We cannot (naturally) walk on water, nor do we have power over the wind, waves, sea and sun. Even the best of human science is severely limited – a “best guess” at most. Since the beginning of time (and forever shall it be), God alone knows all things and can do all things. He alone holds the power to speak something into existence; to create something from nothing. The entire created universe rests upon His finger tip.

So when we talk about our own “man-power” and (earthly) wisdom in conjunction with Almighty God, we must humble ourselves. Any power and wisdom we possess, after all, was given to us by Him … and this is by perfect design. Human beings were created by God to have and enjoy an eternal relationship with Him. In His omniscience, however, He knew that we would not desire a relationship with Him if we did not need Him. In other word’s, mankind’s limitations created a perpetual need for God — the author and finisher of our faith and salvation; the Source of all blessings on earth.

The Psalmist writes in Psalm 147 that God is great, “vast in power, with wisdom beyond measure.” The psalmist knew his need for the Lord, and chances are you do too. There are things happening in your life today, no doubt, that you do not have answers to nor the power to control. But God does. In His omniscience, He knows all things from the beginning to the end, and the end from the beginning; and in His omnipotence, He can do all things for you … and because He loves you, He wants to.

So today, just as the psalmist did, praise God no matter the circumstance! You have been created not only to enjoy a relationship with the Creator of the Universe, but to trust in Him for your every need. He will take care of you. All you need to do is abandon your will for His. Lay all your concerns at the foot of the Cross and trust Him (not the world) to take care of all that worries you. Your faith will lead you down the path everlasting … It is here you shall not want, you shall not be afraid, you will have the final victory.

Prayer

We are so underserving of Your love and attention, Lord, but by Your grace You continue to shower it upon us. Today we praise You for your infinite power and wisdom working in our lives, and we thank You for Your protection and guidance through these times. We pray today to grow in holy virtue, especially humility – forever humbling ourselves before the greatness of our Lord. It is in Your good and holy Name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
