Waiting Patiently For the Lord – Psalm 40:1

I waited patiently for the Lord;
And He reached down to me and heard my cry.

Reflection

One of the hardest things to do is to wait. Especially today. We have grown so accustomed to a push-of-a-button or swipe-of-a-finger mentality that we do not know how to wait (let alone “wait well”) anymore. The world has convinced us that “fast” equates to “good” and so, when we have to wait, we feel as though something is wrong. We believe our prayers have gone unanswered and we quickly become impatient and lose hope.

The reality is, we will spend most of our time waiting. We wait for big things like weddings, a birth of a child, a promotion at work or a vacation to come to pass. We will wait on smaller things like in rush-hour traffic, at a store check-out or for someone to call us back. Simply put, waiting is an unavoidable and necessary part of life. Not to mention, the biblical adage is true: “All good things come to those who wait.” Thus, in order for our lives to be more peaceful (and blessed!), we must learn to embrace the wait and wait well. God blesses patience. Not only that, He does His greatest work when we are made to practice patience amidst uncertainty with a good attitude, full of faith, trust and hope.

So if you are in a season of waiting today, do not run from it. Recognize what the Lord is doing and patiently endure. Do as the psalmist wisely instructed and embrace your test. The Lord is refining you, strengthening your faith and resilience, and is about to do something amazing in your life. But you must carry the Cross with great trust and patience. This is your opportunity to show God that you believe in Him; that you believe His Word that gold is indeed tested and refined by the flames of trial and uncertainty. If you do as King David did and wait patiently for the Lord, He will reach down and bless you in ways that you could never imagine.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; and He reached down to me and heard my cry” Psalm 40:1.

Prayer

Lord, we need Your help today. We are not good at waiting patiently; grumbling and moaning when we do not get our way and quickly growing impatient with the slightest of trials. Forgive us, Father. Help us to better understand that it is in our suffering that You do Your greatest work. Fill us with the strength and perseverance needed to endure any trial we face today, and give us divine patience and meekness to pass our test; to not become dismayed when we feel our prayers have gone unanswered and when the enemy whispers that all our efforts are in vain. We trust in You, Lord, and we resolve to endure the flames of refinement with joy for as long as it takes. It is in Your good and Holy Name we pray, Amen.
