Through all generations Your truth endures;
fixed to stand firm like the earth.
Psalm 119:90
God’s Truth Endures Through All Generations – Psalm 119:90-91
Through all generations Your truth endures;
fixed to stand firm like the earth.
By Your judgments they stand firm to this day,
for all things are Your servants.
Reflection
What is the oldest thing that you own? A family heirloom? A decades-old diamond ring perhaps? An old car, baby blanket or family farm? Maybe an ancient relic of some sort. Whatever it is, it probably beholds much sentimental value. Moreover, depending on how old it is and what it actually is, there is a good chance it has increased in monetary value as well.
As human beings, we tend to decide where to place our faith based on a thing’s longevity. How long it has been in our lives and if it has stood the test of time. While this makes sense on a surface-level, we are reminded throughout Holy Scripture not to place our trust in any created thing (*see 1 Jn. 2:15-17; Prov. 11:28; Heb. 13:5; 1 Tim. 6:7-10, 17; Lk 12:15, 21; Mk 10:21). Possessions, no matter how meaningful they are … are just that, “created things.” They can rust, rot, be stolen or “eaten by moths,” etc. (Matt. 6:19-21; Jm. 5:2). In other words, material goods — our possessions — do not last. They have no eternal merit and will not go with us from this life into the next. We can (and should) enjoy them, yes, but we are not to put our “trust” in them. More importantly, we are not to put created things (including money, fame, a job, the pursuit of power, etc.) above what is eternal and everlasting. We are exhorted rather to “lay up [for ourselves] treasures in Heaven” (Col. 3:2; Matt. 6:20).
So what is a treasure in Heaven? A meritorious “treasure in Heaven” is anything that enhances our relationship with God and is conducive to our eternal salvation. A mighty example of this is the Holy Bible — both His promises and judgements, as well as our proclamation of it. The Word of God has endured throughout all generations, will endure for all-time, and will forever be counted in Heaven as “an eternal treasure.”
As you reflect on these words of the Psalmist today, ask yourself where you have been storing your treasure. In Heaven or on earth? In other words, where have you been putting your trust? When we put all our trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Word made Flesh (the real family heirloom!), we not only become truly blessed in this world, but eternally blessed in the one to come.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You that in this life our relationship with You is the most real and lasting thing we will ever know. When we doubt You, let us quickly be reminded that Your love has been around since the beginning of time; Your Word stands true throughout all generations. Please strengthen our faith today. Help us to resist the temptation to covet worldly things and give us the wisdom to pursue and store up eternal treasures in Heaven. It is in Your good and Holy Name we pray. Amen.
