Psalm 91: Most Powerful Prayer For Protection

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.’

Psalm 91: The Most Powerful Prayer for Protection

Psalm 91 is quoted as being one of – if not the – most powerful chapters and prayers of the entire Holy Bible. Commonly invoked during times of uncertainty and hardship, those who pray with and believe in the words of Psalm 91, truly trusting in the Lord, need not fear the power and deception of the enemy.

Whenever you are in need of the Lord’s protection over your life, a reminder of His loyalty to you, and how He provides for His children in times of famine and in feast, prayerfully and slowly read over this psalm. Meditate on it daily. Reflect on what God is promising you specifically. If possible, memorize your favorite verse(s) and repeat them often throughout the day. In times of great need and uncertainty, if committed to memory, the Holy Spirit will graciously remind you of what God has promised you. These words will protect you, those you love, and the whole world. Let us pray…

Psalm 91: God’s Impenetrable Prayer of Protection

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.’
Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with His feathers,
    and under His wings you will find refuge;
    His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.
If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge,’
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
For He will command His angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
‘Because he loves Me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges My Name.
He will call on Me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him My salvation.’”

Psalm 91 Prayer

Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your continued presence with us. Thank You for Your Almighty wings which cast an impenetrable shadow of protection. Thank You for going before us; and for covering us from behind. Thank You for choosing to be in our midst, for lifting our burdens, and for securing the Heavenly place You have prepared for us. Your divine Words bring so much hope and comfort to our hearts. Remind us daily of Your strength, and may we always see glimpses of Your infallible glory and blessing as we seek Your face throughout our days. Victory and salvation are found in You alone, Lord. It is in the Mighty Name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Word from the Greats

“It is one of the most excellent works of this kind which has ever appeared. It is impossible to imagine anything more solid, more beautiful, more profound, or more ornamented” -de Muis, cited in Spurgeon.

“This psalm is one of the greatest possessions of the saints” -G. Campbell Morgan.

“In the whole collection there is not a more cheering Psalm, its tone is elevated and sustained throughout, faith is at its best, and speaks nobly” -Charles Spurgeon.

What is the 'secret place' of Psalm 91?

The “secret place” in Psalm 91 refers to the Lord’s shelter. The “shelter” being referred to in the first verse is (actually) a ‘fortress’ or a ‘tower.’ The Jerusalem Bible states as follows: “If you live in the shelter of Elyon (High), and make your home in the shadow of Shaddai (God), you can say to Yahweh: My refuge, may fortress, my God in whom I trust!” Amen.

What does 'pestilence' mean in Psalm 91?

Pestilence is a fatal epidemic disease or plague that can affect people all over the world. Pestilence is also known as one of the four Horseman of the Apocalypse divinely revealed in the Book of Revelation (the final Book of the Bible).
