Psalm 19: God’s Glory in the Heavens and in the Law

People from all faiths and cultures stand in awe of the sun and its life-giving properties. Through God’s Revelation, we can know that the sun, like the rest of creation, owes its beauty and brilliance to the one true God who created it (see Genesis). Just as God made the sun to provide light so that we might see and appreciate His works of creation, so God gives us His instruction in the Law and the Commandments so we might be enlightened in pursuit of the truth here on earth which reflects His eternal Wisdom (St. John Paul II, General Audience, January 30, 2002).

The Law of the Lord is perfect even though we don’t always understand it. Like creation, God’s Laws proclaim His glory; and fidelity to His Laws, precepts, and Commandments bring ultimate fulfillment, moral perfection, real joy, and peace to each one of our lives. Furthermore, the Law glorifies God since, when obeyed, it leads every individual to a personal encounter and everlasting life with Him.

In this Psalm, Psalm 19, King David prays for God to forgive even the sins he had committed unwittingly. A daily examination of conscience enables us to recall our sins so that we might repent and grow in virtue (such as humility and charity). As you prayerfully mediate on this Psalm today, think about how God speaks to you through His everyday creation. Reflect also on ways in which God’s Law, when faithfully followed, benefits your life … today and always.

Psalm 19: God’s Glory in the Heavens and in the Law

The Heavens declare the glory of God;
    the firmament proclaims the works of His hands.
Day unto day pours forth speech;
    night unto night whispers knowledge.
There is no speech, no words;
    their voice is not heard;
A report goes forth through all the earth,
    their messages, to the ends of the world.
He has pitched in them a tent for the sun;
    it comes forth like a bridegroom from His canopy,
    and like a hero joyfully runs its course.
From one end of the Heavens it comes forth;
    its course runs through to the other;
    nothing escapes its heat.

The Law of the Lord is perfect,
    refreshing the soul.
The decree of the Lord is trustworthy,
    giving wisdom to the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart.
The command of the Lord is clear,
    enlightening the eye.
10 The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The statutes of the Lord are true,
    all of them just;
11 More desirable than gold,
    than a hoard of purest gold,
Sweeter also than honey
    or drippings from the comb.
12 By them your servant is warned;
    obeying them brings much reward.

13 Who can detect trespasses?
    Cleanse me from my inadvertent sins.
14 Also from arrogant ones restrain Your servant;
    let them never control me.
Then shall I be blameless,
    innocent of grave sin.
15 Let the words of my mouth be acceptable,
    the thoughts of my heart before You,
    Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
