The oppression of the righteous by the wicked is especially felt with vain and proud speech (v 2-5); but the righteous will always find comfort in the pure (and promised) Word of God.
Psalm 12: Help, Lord, There’s No One Loyal!–Protection from the Wicked
1 Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore;
those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
2 Everyone lies to their neighbor;
they flatter with their lips
but harbor deception in their hearts.
3 May the Lord silence all flattering lips
and every boastful tongue—
4 those who say,
“By our tongues we will prevail;
our own lips will defend us—who is Lord over us?”
5 “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan,
I will now arise,” says the Lord.
“I will protect them from those who malign them.”
6 And the words of the Lord are flawless,
like silver purified in a crucible,
like gold refined seven times.
7 You, Lord, will keep the needy safe
and will protect us forever from the wicked,
8 who freely strut about
when what is vile is honored by the human race.
There’s an old saying, “Brick’s and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!” To a certain degree that may be true; but to another degree that is certainly false. The truth is, words (especially by loved ones) can (and do) hurt. The psalmist felt immense pain from the words of the “wicked.” He cried out for the Lord because, as he said, the godly man is no more. He was surrounded by evil. And to a certain degree, you may feel like that today; like society has fallen into such a state of indignity and carelessness that it’s beyond repair. Hopeless.
With all the pain and frustration the psalmist felt, there was but one place he could turn for peace and healing: the infallible Word of God. He knew the Lord’s Word could – and would – heal.
There is indeed real and tangible healing power in the Word of God. If you are feeling tired and hopeless today, do as the psalmist did and turn to your Heavenly Father. Read His Word daily and talk openly to Him about all you’re going through. The Good Lord promises to keep you safe. No matter how things appear today, know (and believe!) that He is always on your side. Trust Him.
