Verse of the Day: Matthew 5:6

Verse of the Day: October 8th — Matthew 5:6

“Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be satisfied.”
Matthew 5:6

This verse is a teaching from Jesus’s beloved ‘Sermon on the Mount’ speech. The Sermon on the Mount proclaimed salvation, beginning with the Beatitudes (“states of utmost blessing or happiness”) which are at the center of the Good News. The word “righteousness” in the Biblical sense signifies one’s complete submission to the Lord’s will. In this verse, one who ‘hungers and thirsts for righteousness’ means to have a sense of urgency both to live the Gospel and to spread it to others.

Today’s Prayer:

“Lord Jesus, make us a steadfast people after Your own heart, will and desire. Strengthen our faith today. Allow us to see clearly that Your way and Your will is the best way. Not our own. Give us the courage and wisdom to follow You even when we don’t understand; when we cannot see what lies ahead; and our knees tremble with fear. Make us a people who hunger and thirst for Your righteousness, Lord, so that we may be blessed and satisfied on earth as it is in Heaven. We pray this all in Your good and Holy Name — forever and ever, Amen.”
