Powerful Prayers for Independence Day

“Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord” –Psalm 33:12.

As you celebrate the Declaration of Independence this weekend, take a few minutes to pray for this great Nation under God, the future of it, and all her people. For life, liberty, and justice for all. Amen.

Powerful Prayers for Independence Day

1.) Independence Day PrayerBy Chaplain, Rev. Edward G.L.

“Eternal God,
According to Psalm 33, ‘Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord,’ Amen.
Stir in our hearts this day a humble yet high sense of patriotism
for this Land on this Independence Day weekend.

May this time symbolize a renewal of our faith in freedom, our devotion to democracy, and re-double our efforts to keep a government of the people, by the people, and for the people forever and ever. Amen.

Grant that we may highly resolve on this great day of Independence to dedicate ourselves anew to the task of ushering in an era when good will live in the hearts of a free people; justice shall be the light to guide their feet, and peace shall be the goal of humankind: to the glory of Your Holy Name and the good of our Nation and of all mankind.

In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.”

-Adaped prayer offered by Congress by Chaplain, Rev. Edward G. Latch, D.D. (1974)

2.) Prayer for our Nation

“God our Father, giver of life,
We entrust the United States of America to Your loving care.
You are the Rock on which this great nation was founded.
You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness.
Reclaim this land for Your greater glory and dwell among Your people.

Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation’s leaders.
Open their minds to the great worth of all citizens and children of God,
and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom.
Remind Your people, Lord, that true happiness is rooted in seeking
and doing Your will.

Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, patroness of our Land,
grant us the courage to reject the ‘culture of death’.
Lead us into a new time of life – united and lived
in faithfulness to You.

We ask all of this through Jesus Christ, Your Son and our Lord.
Amen.”

3.) Prayer for Independence Day

“Father in Heaven, Lord of Justice, and for all~
We turn to Thee this day…
On this Independence Day, we recall the day

when our country claimed its place among the family of all nations.
You reveal that those who work for peace will be called Your
sons and daughters.

Please continue to send Your Spirit to touch the hearts and minds
of all who cherish the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
As You have called us to be one nation, grant that under Your providence
our country may share Your blessings with all the peoples of the earth.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns
with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever.

In Your Holy Name we pray,
Amen.”

-Prayer adapted by Father Dominic, SCJ

4.) Father of all Nations and AgesNew Roman Missal

“Father of all Nations and ages,
We recall the day when our country claimed its place
among the family of nations.
For all that has been achieved, we give You thanks;
for the work that still remains, we ask Your help,
and, as You have called us from many peoples

to be one nation,
grant that, under Your providence,
our country may share Your blessings
with all the peoples of the earth.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
One God, for ever and ever, Amen.”

-New Roman Missal

5.) Prayer of Life and Liberty

“God,
Eternal source of all freedom,
this day is bright with the memory
of those who declared that life and liberty
are Your gift to every human being.
Help us to continue a good work begun long ago.
Make our vision clear and our will strong and courageous:
That only in human solidarity will we behold liberty and justice,
belonging to every life on earth.

Turn our hearts toward the family of nations:
to understand the ways of others,

sensitive to one another’s differences,
offering friendship,
and finding safety in the common good for all.
We ask this in and through Christ our Lord.

In Your Good and Holy Name we pray,
Amen.”

6.) Prayer for Protection of freedom

“O God, our loving and loyal Creator,

From Your provident hand we have received
our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
You have called us as Your people and given us the right
and the duty to worship You, the only true God,
and Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Through the power and working of Your Holy Spirit,
You call us to live out our faith in the midst of this world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel
to every last corner of the earth.

We humbly ask of You to bless us in our efforts,
and in our vigilance, for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind, heart and soul,
to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened.
Give us the courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of Your Church
and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.

Grant us, we pray, O heavenly Father,
clear and united voices for all Your beloved
sons and daughters gathered in Your Church
in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood
and with every danger overcome—

for the sake of our children, our grandchildren,
and all who come after us—
this great land will always be ‘one Nation, under God,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.’

We ask this through Christ our Lord,
Amen.”

“All the Nations You have made shall come to bow before You, Lord, and give honor to Your Name. For You are great and do wondrous deeds; and You alone are God” –Psalm 86:9-10.
