Day Twenty Nine of Lent: Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent – Daniel 13

“Through tears she looked up to Heaven, for she trusted in the Lord wholeheartedly” – Daniel 13:35.

Today’s Lenten Reflection

Today’s reading tells the story of a godly and virtuous woman who refused to back down in the face of injustice. Susanna, a fair Hebrew wife, was falsely accused by two lecherous voyeurs after refusing their advances. As she was about to be put to death for adultery, Daniel interrupted the proceedings by demanding the elders to be questioned. After being cross-examined, the men were caught in their lies and ultimately put to death. In the end, the holy virtues of Susanna triumphed.

The story of Susanna reminds us that when unfairness in life happens, we are to trust God. We do this by seeking His truth and justice in all things and at all costs – even to the point of death. If we do, if we surrender all things to God’s care, He will bring about the victory in our lives in a way we could not have imagined.

Day Twenty Nine Lenten Meditation

Have you ever been in a situation where someone accused you of something you didn’t do? How did it feel? In those situations it is hard not to feel trapped, as Susanna did. No matter what she did, she knew she wouldn’t far well. But instead of rolling over in defeat, Susanna hit her knees and trusted God. And this is exactly what we are called to do as well. We must always remember that our God is an “all just” God. That means that with Him justice will prevail … even when it doesn’t seem like it. So God is asking all of us today to trust Him even when things seem unfair, illogical and impossible. Behold, He is making all things new!

Lenten Prayer

God of all mercy and justice, we struggle to trust completely. We want to protect ourselves and those we love and guard against those who would hurt us. In the process, we often lose our confidence in You. Forgive us for those times we are weak and lacking in trust. Fill us with the grace of unwavering trust and courage in Your divine plan. We love You Jesus and we place all our hope in Your love and mercy. It is in Your good and holy Name we pray, amen.

Today’s Suggested Penance

Say a strong prayer on your knees today for anyone you know who is lacking in faith.
