6 Powerful Psalms to Pray During Times of Crisis

You have brought us victory over our enemies,
shamed those who hate us.
In God we have boasted all the day long;
Your Name we will praise forever.

6 Powerful Psalms to Pray During Times of Crisis

Times of crisis will come. We can be sure of that. In fact, we are living through one of those times right now. Whether you are experiencing a crisis in your own life from anxiety about finances, relationships, your children, health etc., or feelings of crisis from watching daily reports of violence, crime and war raging in the streets, feeling overwhelmed and powerless is understandable.

But the good news is, as Christians, we are not powerless. Far from it. In our own finite power we cannot do much, but with God we can transform the entire world. We do this through the supernatural love and peace of Christ. In fact, God is counting on us to bring the light of Christ into our living rooms, neighborhoods and current culture. If we quiet ourselves long enough to truly listen, we will hear the gentle whisper of God saying: If not you, who? Think about that for a moment. If not us Christians, who then? Who will be the light in the darkness? Perhaps more now than ever, the world is in need of a transformation — a total conversion back to God. But where do we begin?

Scripture repeatedly reminds us that no matter what is going on, no matter how things look in the natural, we are to pray “without ceasing” (1 Thes 5:17). Prayer is the weapon that cuts through the strongest of strongholds, not only in our own lives but across the globe. Evil is working overtime to make sure as many souls are as ensnared in despair and loss as possible. So then we too must work overtime using our spiritual weapons — prayer — to combat the wiles of evil.

As you prayerfully meditate on these 6 Most Powerful Psalms to Pray During Times of Crisis, ask the Holy Spirit for increased wisdom, discernment, strength, courage and perseverance. When you pray, God promises to be with you and to guide you. When you pray for peace, he promises to bless you. On your knees, no crisis is ever be too big for victory.

6 Powerful Psalms to Pray During Times of Crisis

Psalm 72:1-4, 17-19

O God, give Your judgment to the king;
Your justice to the king’s son;
That he may govern Your people with justice,
Your oppressed with right judgment,
That the mountains may yield their bounty for the people,
and the hills great abundance,
That he may defend the oppressed among the people,
save the children of the poor and crush the oppressor.

May His Name be forever;
as long as the sun, may His Name endure.
May the tribes of the earth give blessings with His Name;
may all the nations regard Him as favored.
Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does wonderful deeds.
Blessed be His glorious Name forever;
may He fill all the earth with His glory.
Amen and amen.

Psalm 22:28-32

All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the Lord;
All the families of nations
will bow low before Him.
For kingship belongs to the Lord,
the ruler over the nations.
All who sleep in the earth
will bow low before God;
All who have gone down into the dust
will kneel in homage.
And I will live for the Lord;
my descendants will serve You.
The generation to come will be told of the Lord,
that they may proclaim to a people yet unborn
the deliverance You have brought.

Psalm 28:6-9

Blessed be the Lord,
    who has heard the sound of my pleading.
The Lord is my strength and my shield,
    in whom my heart trusts.
I am helped, so my heart rejoices;
    with my song I praise Him.
Lord, You are a strength for Your people,
    the saving refuge of Your anointed.
Save Your people, bless Your inheritance;
    pasture and carry them forever!

Psalm 33:3-5, 8-15, 20-22

Sing to Him a new song;
skillfully play with joyful chant.
For the Lord’s Word is upright;
all His works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right.
The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all who dwell in the world show Him reverence.
For He spoke, and it came to be,
commanded, and it stood in place.
The Lord foils the plan of nations,
frustrates the designs of peoples.
But the plan of the Lord stands forever,
the designs of His heart through all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
the people chosen as His inheritance.
From Heaven the Lord looks down
and observes the children of Adam,
From His dwelling place He surveys
all who dwell on earth.
The One who fashioned together their hearts
is the One who knows all their works.

Our soul waits for the Lord,
He is our help and shield.
For in Him our hearts rejoice;
in His holy Name we trust.
May Your mercy, Lord, be upon us;
as we put our hope in You.

Psalm 44:2-9, 25-26

O God, we have heard with our own ears;
our ancestors have told us
The deeds You did in their days,
with Your own hand in days of old:
You rooted out nations to plant them,
crushed peoples and expelled them.
Not with their own swords did they conquer the land,
nor did their own arms bring victory;
It was Your right hand, Your own arm,
the light of Your face for you favored them.
You are my King and my God,
who bestows victories on Jacob.
Through You we batter our foes;
through Your Name we trample our adversaries.
Not in my bow do I trust,
nor does my sword bring me victory.

You have brought us victory over our enemies,
shamed those who hate us.
In God we have boasted all the day long;
Your Name we will praise forever.

Psalm 83:2-6, 17-19

God, do not be silent;
God, do not be deaf or remain unmoved!
See how your enemies rage;
your foes proudly raise their heads.
They conspire against your people,
plot against those you protect.
They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation;
let Israel’s name be remembered no more!”
They scheme with one mind,
they have entered into a covenant against you:

Cover their faces with shame,
till they seek your name, Lord.
Let them be ashamed and terrified forever;
let them perish in disgrace.
Let them know that your name is Lord,
you alone are the Most High over all the earth.

For Contemplation

Once you have finished meditating on these six psalm verses, pray them again but this time by putting them into the words of your own prayer. When we use the Lord’s words in combination with our own, our prayers become “prayer squared” — in other words, even more effective against the powers of darkness. When the devil tempted Jesus after forty days of fasting in the desert, what did Jesus use in order to combat him? The Word of God. Praying this way is sure to turn any crisis into an opportunity; a chance for God to show His glory through your triumph. Keep praying!
