Staying on the Powerful Path of Biblical Purity – Psalm 119:9
How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to Your Word.
Reflection
In this verse, the psalmist asks a very important question: How can a person stay on the path of purity? He posed this question because he knew that living a life of purity was a non-negotiable with God; a lifestyle mankind must always strive after. We often understand “purity” today as total cleanness which is oftentimes associated with sexual purity. While sexual purity is incredibly important to God (and powerful!), biblical purity in general covers a much larger spiritual terrain such as the call to single-mindedness and whole-heartedness.
Being “single-minded” simply means to be solely focused on God; the determination to carry out His will. Being “whole-hearted” will ultimately lead a soul away from instability and doubt and into the rest and stability of God’s love. Answering the call to live this way — single-minded and whole-hearted — opens Heaven’s door to experience the fullness of God. In the words of His Apostle, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you … cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you men of double mind” (James 4:8).
Moreover, the Bible clearly reaffirms that the cure for the world’s ills is for all men to live lives of purity — an undivided commitment and loyalty to God. Living impurely, double-minded or “of the world” is the same as idolatry: “Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4). Being “double-minded” literally means being two-spirited — wishy-washy, uncommitted, doubting, having a division of interest between the things of this world (God’s creation) and the things of God (the Creator). And sadly, living impurely also opens the door for temptation and sin … inevitably separating us from enjoying close intimacy with our loving and Holy Father.
So how can we stay on a “path of purity”? According to the psalmist, “by living according to [God’s] Word” (Ps. 119:9). The Word of God will not only keep us on the path of purity, a pre-requisite of God, it is also our best defense against hopelessness, fear and despair. It also happens to be our best offense against temptation, lies and the snares of the enemy — both the enemy of the soul and of this world. So use His Holy Word to guide you and keep you on the righteous path … today and always.
Prayer
