7 Most Important Reasons Why You Should Pray the Psalms

Praying the Psalms teaches us how to pray

Praying is one of the most important aspects of the Christian life. And just like the disciples, we do not always know how to pray (Matt. 6:5-15). When we read through the vast and passionate prayers of the psalmist’s, however, it changes how we pray and how we interact with our Lord during our conversations with Him. This is the key to answered prayer and breakthrough.

Prayerfully reading the Psalms helps us better respond to the Word of God

Throughout the Word of God, we are told that we will learn from the People of God who went before us. When we read how the psalmists praised and responded to God and His will, we will be soulfully encouraged to do the same. The blessings will always follow obedience.

The Psalms give a rich palette of emotional colors to describe, understand, and feel our own experiences

There is no other Book in the Bible that describes human emotion quite like the psalms. It is an intimate reflection of our own heart and soul; our experience here on earth. When you read the plea’s and praises of the psalmists you will not only relate, you will know with certainty that you have never been alone and you never will be.

Praying the Psalms aligns our desires with God’s desires for us

It is of utmost importance that we desire what God desires for us, that we will as God will’s, because God’s plan is infinitely better than ours. Unfortunately, our natural inclination is often to seek what we ought to stay away from. Similarly, we often move away from that which we should seek. Praying the Psalms daily aligns our Spirit with God’s in a supernatural way. We begin wanting and searching after what He wills for our lives. When that happens, all the right doors begin to open.

Praying the Psalms will soften hardened hearts

The Psalms transform negative and draining emotions into uplifting and life-giving ones. Over time, the words of the Psalms shape our affections so that we love what God says and what He loves, and we detest and avoid all that is wrong in God’s sight. Subsequently, our emotions are softened and filled with love, forgiveness, understanding and a peace (Phil. 4:7).

Praying the Psalms will safeguard the mind from a “me and God” mentality

In western culture, Christianity is often viewed as a solo practice with God — a “me and God” thing vs. a “we and God” thing. But what Christianity is really about is community and unity. There is real power in unified prayer with our brethren. The psalms remind us that we are strength in numbers and we must work together as one body for maximum results and blessing (Matt. 18:19; Eccl. 4:12).

Praying the Psalms brings faith to life

Praying the Psalms is God’s antidote to a staleness of heart in one’s walk with Him. It is nearly impossible to pray the Psalms and not fall in love with God and His Word all over again. No matter how you are feeling or what you are going through in life, there is a Psalm that will speak directly to you. A psalm that will reignite the spark for fervent prayer and ultimately lead to a strengthened relationship with Christ. There is nothing more important this side of Heaven than having a strong relationship with our Lord.
