Even though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for You are with me…
When You Walk Through the Valley of Death, Fear No Evil – Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff comfort me.
Valleys are a part of the journey of life. In the physical world, we often have to walk through these valleys to get to greener pastures — the “peaks” of life. They are not easy or fun, but it is often the trek through the valley that strengthens us mentally, physically and spiritually … preparing us for what lies ahead.
If you are experiencing the valley — some kind of low — in your life right now, remember that your Shepherd is near you. He promises to guide you along these particularly rough patches. The psalmist himself proclaimed, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me.” The psalmist knew (without a doubt) that, because God was with him, he had nothing to fear … not even in the valley of death.
Allow yourself to envision what lies just beyond your proverbial valley today: fresher waters, calmer weather, greener pastures — Heaven on earth. Allow the hope of this “other side” to make you feel stronger and more confident as you weather this current storm in faith. You have your Savior beside you now. He always has been there and He always will be, so you are not alone. When we travel with God through the valleys, He will guide us to our Promised Land. But we must let Him lead. His heavenly rod and mighty staff is there to protect and comfort you. So in the words of God Himself: “Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand” (Is. 41:10).
Jesus, as we face the valleys in our lives today, give us the grace of vision to see beyond these trials and temptations. Knowing that You are here to protect and comfort us along the way, we will not fear. We love You, Lord. It is in Your good and holy Name we pray. Amen.
