The Lord’s Promise Preserves Our Life – Psalm 119:50
My comfort in my suffering is this:
Your promise preserves my life.
Reflection
Jesus told us that in this life we would have trouble (Jn 16:33). He knew we would suffer many hardships, experiencing even unbearable grief. Fortunately, our Lord also gave us many unbreakable promises. But while these promises remind us we have nothing to fear, they do come with a caveat. In order for the Lord’s divine promises to be activated in our lives — for us to be victorious — we must abide in Him. We must remain faithful to His Word instead of falling into doubt and loss of hope.
When the psalmist was experiencing extreme hardship, fearing for his life, he lifted His eyes to Heaven and proclaimed: “My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise(s) preserve my life.” Did you catch that? When the psalmist’s life was in danger, literally being hunted down on all sides by an enemy, his comfort was found solely in the Lord’s promises. He knew the Lord would not fail him because His promises were true forever … and it is the same for us today:
Because the Lord has promised to always love you (1 Jn 4:9-10), He promises to hear your every prayer (Jn 14:13-14), to be with you no matter where you go (Josh. 1:9), and to never leave you (Deut. 31:6). He promises to be your strength in battle (Phil. 4:13) and to fight for you (Ex. 14:14). Moreover, He promises to give you a supernatural peace (Jn 14:27) and to prosper the work of your hands (Jer. 29:11).
These promises should give you great comfort! Just as the psalmist was not alone in his struggles, neither are you today. With faith, the Lord will give you all you need to be victorious. You need only to trust Him — to believe in His Word and have hope. So today, reach up to the sky and faithfully proclaim: “Jesus, Your promises preserve my life. I trust in You!” With these words, prepare for victory.
“My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life” – Psalm 119:50.
Prayer
Father, we know that You love us more than anything. Because of this love, You care about our every worry and pain. Today we ask You for the grace of strong faith like the psalmist. Help us to believe Your every promise and to live as though we believe them. Comfort us during times of struggle and give us Your joy during difficult times. Show us also, Lord, how to honor You while carrying our daily crosses; to You be the glory in our victory. We love You, Lord, and we thank You for Your everlasting promises. This side of Heaven, You are our true and lasting comfort. It is in Your good and Holy Name we pray, Amen.
