It seems like everywhere we look nowadays, something is happening that could make us angry if we allowed it. Anger in and of itself isn’t necessarily a bad thing so long as it’s used in the appropriate context and as the appropriate response. Jesus Christ Himself was angered at times but His anger was always the appropriate response and always justified. Thus, anger is not the sin. It is the expression of anger that, if we’re not careful, can be(come).
Throughout Scripture, unrighteous, unprovoked, vengeful and wrathful anger is strongly condemned. Unfortunately, and more often than not, it is this kind of anger we can often feel and experience. The kind of anger that is harmful (if not catastrophic) to families, friendships, relationships, careers, our world and, yes, our salvation. Moreover, and on the daily, this kind of anger takes a negative toll on us physically, emotionally and spiritually leaving us drained of energy, bitter and resentful. Make no mistake, the devil loves when we’re angry. He wants us to lash out and hurt other people around us as well as ourselves. He knows that by losing our temper and harboring anger towards others, we’ll be zapped of (divine) power, alienated from others (which opens us up to further attacks), blocks prayers, causes increased strife and, inevitably, blocks us from living our best life (*see Ephesians 6:12).
So, if you are feeling angry today it’s time for a mental re-set. It’s time to stop those heavy feelings of anger in their tracks (Ps 37:8). One of the best ways to do this is by reading Scripture and understanding what God says about it. What are the warnings? The consequences? This is also a crucial component to overcoming feelings of anger (and depression) as well as dark forces (of evil) trying to hold you back. Understanding God’s Word on this issue will not only protect you, it’ll fully restore your soul to peace.
