Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger
or discipline me in Your wrath.
Psalm 6:1
Lord, Do Not Rebuke Me In Your Anger – Psalm 6:1-5
1 Lord, do not rebuke me in Your anger
or discipline me in Your wrath.
2 Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint;
heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.
3 My soul is in deep anguish.
How long, Lord, how long?
4 Turn, Lord, and deliver me;
save me because of Your unfailing love.
5 Among the dead no one proclaims Your Name.
For who [can] praise You from the grave?
–Psalm 6:1-5
Reflection
King David was in agony. He weeped over sickness, agonizing troubles of mind and Spirit, and constant attacks from the enemy. He pleaded for God to have mercy on him and, as patience wore thin cried out, “How long, Lord, how long?” But David also realized that part of his problems were due to God’s love for Him coming out in discipline and chastisement. David pleaded, “Do not rebuke me in Your anger or discipline me in Your wrath.” David knew his own shortcomings.
God loves a humble and contrite Spirit before Him. He can do nothing in a life that is filled with pride. But with humility and charity, God can do all things in the life of a believer. What’s more? He wants to. Ask God today for an increase in holy virtue, especially humility. He will be more than happy to answer this kind of prayer; and once the soul is humble, God will be happy to answer those other prayer requests as well. At the end of the day, it is the Lord Who can deliver and help you. So no matter what is going on in your life today, no matter how long it seems to be taking, keep going, keep striving, keep praying. Do as David did and humble yourself before the Throne of God, repent of your sins, and say to Him as David did: “Turn, Lord, and deliver me; save me because of Your unfailing love.“
