Listen to my words, Lord,
consider my lament.
Hear my cry for help,
my King and my God,
for to You I pray.
Listen To My Words, Lord! A Plea for Answered Prayer – Psalm 5:1-7
Listen to my words, Lord,
consider my lament.
Hear my cry for help,
my King and my God,
for to You I pray.
In the morning, Lord, You hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before You
and wait expectantly.
For You are not a God Who is pleased with wickedness;
with You, evil people are not welcome.
The arrogant cannot stand
in Your presence.
You hate all who do wrong;
you destroy those who tell lies.
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
You, Lord, detest.
But I, by Your great love,
can come into Your house;
in reverence I bow down
toward Your Holy temple.
Amen.
–Psalm 5:1-7
Reflection
King David knew how to pray. He was not ashamed to come before His Lord and beg Him to hear his plea. But David was also a humble man. He approached the Throne of Grace with the utmost reverence and humility. He would lay his requests before God and wait expectantly for God to act … in His way, on His timetable.
It is wise to take a few minutes and prayerfully consider what King David said to the Lord in prayer: “You are not a God Who is pleased with wickedness; with You, evil people are not welcome. The arrogant cannot stand in Your presence. You hate all who do wrong; you destroy those who tell lies. The bloodthirsty and deceitful You, Lord, detest. But I, by Your great love, can come into Your house; in reverence I bow down toward Your Holy temple…” (Ps 5:4-7). These are strong words, no doubt, but they are divinely inspired and thus need to be taken seriously.
If we want God to answer our prayers like He did the greats of the past, we need to do as they did … to enter the house of the Lord in reverence, bowing down toward His Holy temple. In other words, we need extreme humility, a repentant heart, and the courage to obey whatever He instructs us. Our God is a good God, but He demands obedience. He is to be honored, praised and worshipped above all else. When we love Him like He loves us, the Lord has promised to open the flood gates of Heaven upon our lives. But … we must do our part. Today, honor God. Lay all your requests before Him with a contrite and repentant heart, and have faith that He will hear and answer you. When He does, obey whatever He tells you.
As you meditate on this psalm, humbly get on your knees and tell the Lord how much you love Him; let Him know all that you need … and then believe Him for it.
