3 Psalms to Pray When Your Heart Hurts
In the Gospel of John we are reminded that in this life we will have trouble (v 16:33). That is because, due to original sin, we live in a fallen world with other fallen people of free will. But even though this is the case, we are promised in that same verse to “take heart!” because Jesus has overcome the world and all it’s pain, suffering, and hardship. That doesn’t mean we won’t suffer here because, as promised, on earth we will indeed have trouble; it simply means that God has made a way for us through the pain – and one day to total victory in Heaven.
While our faith can lift us from the darkest of valleys, we still have to “go through the desert plain” as they say. Thankfully, we have prayer – a direct means of communicating with our Lord – to help us through any difficult time or challenge. God is with you; He is for you; and if you put your trust in Him through prayer and unwavering faith, He promises to heal you.
If you are going through a difficult time right now, lean into your Heavenly Father with prayer. More specifically, lean into the Psalms. 3 Psalms to Pray When Your Heart Hurts
Psalm 34:18
The righteous cry out, the Lord hears
    and He rescues them from all their afflictions.
Heavenly Father, in this moment of pain, I humbly come before You and beseech You. Your Word says that You are near the brokenhearted, and I believe that promise with all my heart and soul and take Your Word into my heart at this time. Please draw near to me, Father, and mend my wounded heart; and through this healing process, increase the virtue of strength, courage, and perseverance in my being. Use all things, all pain, for your greater glory. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
Psalm 42:11
Why are you downcast, my soul,
    why do you groan within me?
Wait for God, for I shall again praise Him,
    my Savior and my God.
Heavenly Father, my soul is downcast and my heart aches today. Yet, I choose to put my hope in You. You are my Savior and my God, the Author and Finisher of all my work. I ask You, Lord, to please restore my joy and peace, even in the midst of sorrow. I pray that all my current heartache and suffering will be used for Your greater glory and my greater good in the end. Lord Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
Psalm 147:3-5
Healing the brokenhearted,
    and binding up their wounds.
He numbers the stars,
    and gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, vast in power,
    with wisdom beyond measure.
Heavenly Father, I bring my broken heart to You this day. Your Word says that You heal the brokenhearted and bind up all their wounds; that You number the stars and give them all names. Great is Your care, O Lord; vast in power with wisdom beyond measure. I ask for Your healing touch and Your comfort in this time of heartache and uncertainty; and as you change me Lord, give me the strength I need to grow in Your ways. May I increase in Christ-like virtue through this pain, and may all trial and tribulation be used for the greater glory of Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.
