6 Most Powerful Prayers to Saint Michael the Archangel
First, who is the Archangel Michael?
Saint Michael is God’s most trusted angel, and he wastes no time in carrying out Heaven’s Commands. A fierce warrior, protector, and comforting guardian, Michael is the greatest angel of all. He is Heaven’s most powerful archangel.
God reveals to Daniel the prophet that Michael, “one of the chief princes,” is the guardian of the Israelites (see Daniel 12:1). The very name, Michael, means Who is like God — an angel who acts with great authority. Michael is a champion of goodness and justice who fights evil at every occasion.
When one of God’s angels, Lucifer, now known as Satan, started a war in Heaven, Michael and his angels fought and defeated him and his rebels and threw them out of Heaven. Thus Michael is known as the “warrior angel” and is often painted wearing a full suit of armor.
It is said that Saint Michael appeared in Rome, Italy, during a horrible plague. This is why he is now a patron for the sick and the one who receives their souls into Heaven. Michael is also believed to be a guardian of high places. Two monasteries dedicated to Michael – Saint Michael’s Mount in Great Britain and Mont Saint Michel in France – were both built on outcrops of rock.
Saint Michael: Patron and Protector
St. Michael has been especially honored and invoked as patron and protector by the Church from the time of the Apostles. Although he is always called “the Archangel,” the Greek Fathers and many others place him over all the angels as Prince of the Seraphim. From the time this fearless Archangel defeated the rebel Lucifer in the conflict of the heavenly hosts, he has been known as “Michael,” the captain of the armies of God – a type, or figure, of divine fortitude, the champion of every faithful soul that battles with the powers of evil.
Saint Michael the Archangel appears in Holy Scripture as the guardian of the children of Israel, their comfort and protector in times of sorrow and conflict. It is he who prepares for their return from Persian captivity, who leads the valiant Maccabees to victory, and who rescues the body of Moses from the envious grasp of the Evil One. Since Christ’s coming, the Church has venerated Saint Michael as her special patron and protector. She invokes him by name in her confession of sin, summons him to the side of her children in the agony of death, and chooses him as their escort from the chastening flames of purgatory to the realms of holy light.
Lastly, when the Antichrist sets up his kingdom on earth outright, it will be Michael who will unfurl once more the standard of the Cross, sound the last trumpet and, binding together the false prophet and the beast, hurl them for all-time into eternity to the burning pool of unquenchable fire.
Archangel Michael Feast Day
