7 Most Effective Prayers to the Holy Spirit for Power and Intercession
There is an ancient refrain to the Spirit that prays, “Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.” A powerful line echoing the wise statement in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “We pray the way we live, and we live the way we pray” (CCC 2725).
If we want to change the way we live we must change the way we pray, and this is what the Holy Spirit does in and for us when we yield to Him. It is the Holy Spirit who opens and closes all doors to prayer; thus, we are wise to pray to the Holy Spirit – He who anoints in power all directions of our lives; He who opens all the right doors, while closing all the wrong ones.
If you are in need of the Holy Spirit’s power and intercession today, trust that no matter what you are going through these prayers to the Holy Ghost, 5 Most Effective Prayers to the Holy Spirit for Power and Intercession, will not only keep you protected but will assist you in your prayers becoming answered. Try to make praying these prayers to the Spirit a weekly (if not daily!) spiritual discipline.

Novena to the Holy Spirit
The Novena to the Holy Spirit is the prototype of all novenas. It commemorates the nine days between the Ascension of Our Lord and the descent of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost Sunday. During this time, Our Lady and the twelve Apostles prayed in the upper room for the coming of the Paraclete. This prayer can be said during Easter Season and on Pentecost, as well as any other time you are in need of His power and intercession.
O Holy Spirit, O my God, I adore Thee, and acknowledge, here in Thy divine presence, that I am nothing and can do nothing without Thee. Come, great Paraclete, Thou father of the poor, Thou comforter the best, fulfill the promise of our blessed Savior, Who would not leave us orphans, and come into the mind and the heart of Thy poor, unworthy creature, as Thou didst descend on the sacred day of Pentecost on the holy Mother of Jesus and on His first disciples. Grant that I may participate in those gifts which Thou didst communicate to them so wonderfully, and with so much mercy and generosity. Take from my heart whatever is not pleasing to Thee, and make of it a worthy dwelling-place for Thyself. Illumine my mind, that I may see and understand the things that are for my eternal good. Inflame my heart with pure love of Thee, that I may be cleansed from the dross of all inordinate attachments, and that my whole life may be hidden with Jesus in God. Strengthen my will, that I may be made conformable to Thy divine will, and be guided by Thy holy inspirations. Aid me by Thy grace to practice the divine lessons of humility, poverty, obedience, and contempt of the world, which Jesus taught us in His mortal life.
Oh, rend the heavens, and come down, consoling Spirit! that inspired and encouraged by Thee, I may faithfully comply with the duties of my state, carry my daily cross most patiently, and endeavor to accomplish the divine will with the utmost perfection. Spirit of love! Spirit of purity! Spirit of peace! Sanctify my soul more and more, and give me that heavenly peace which the world cannot give. Bless our Holy Father the Pope, bless the Church, bless our bishops, our priests, all Religious Orders, and all the faithful, that they may be filled with the spirit of Christ and labor earnestly for the spread of His kingdom.
O Holy Spirit, Thou Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant me, I beseech Thee, the intentions of this novena. May Thy will be done in me and through me. Mayest Thou be praised and glorified forevermore! Amen.
Prayer for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
The following prayer is from the heart of St. Alphonsus de’ Liguori. In it, we ask the Holy Spirit to grant us His seven gifts. These seven gifts are first enumerated in the Old Testament Book of Isaiah (11: 1-3) and appear in many Christian devotional works which include this prayer:
Holy Spirit, divine Consoler, I adore You as my true God,
with God the Father and God the Son.
I adore You and unite myself to the adoration
You receive from the angels and saints.
I give You my heart and I offer my ardent thanksgiving
for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me.
O Giver of all supernatural gifts, who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with such immense favors,
I beg You to visit me with Your grace and Your love
and to grant me the gift of Holy Fear,
so that it may act on me as a check to prevent me
from falling back into my past sins, for which I beg pardon.
Grant me the gift of Piety, so that I may serve
You for the future with increased fervor,
follow with more promptness Your holy inspirations,
and observe Your divine precepts with greater fidelity.
Grant me the gift of Knowledge, so that I may know the things of God and, enlightened by Your holy teaching, may walk, without deviation,
in the path of eternal salvation.
Grant me the gift of Fortitude, so that I may overcome courageously all the assaults of the devil, and all the dangers of this world
which threaten the salvation of my soul.
Grant me the gift of Counsel, so that I may choose what is more conducive
to my spiritual advancement and may discover the wiles and snares of the tempter.
Grant me the gift of Understanding, so that I may apprehend the divine mysteries and by contemplation of heavenly things detach my thoughts and affections from the vain things of this miserable world.
Grant me the gift of Wisdom, so that I may rightly direct all my actions, referring them to God as my last end; so that, having loved Him and served Him in this life,
I may have the happiness of possessing Him eternally in the next. Amen.
Litany of the Holy Spirit
This litany reminds us of the many attributes of the Holy Spirit (including the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit), while asking for His guidance and grace as we struggle to grow in the spiritual life. While the litany is not approved for public use, it should be prayed privately, by yourself, or with your family or small group. It would be especially appropriate to pray the litany on Pentecost.
*In the central part of the litany, the italicized response (“have mercy on us”) should be recited after each line.

Prayer in Honor of the Holy Spirit
O GOD the Holy Spirit, Whom I have ignored, grieved and resisted from my childhood until the present day, reveal to me Thy personality, Thy presence, Thy power. Let me recognize Thy Sevenfold Gifts—–the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, of Counsel and Fortitude, of Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. O Thou Who art the Spirit of the Father and the Son, O Thou Who dost baptize with fire and infuse Thy love into our hearts—–one thing, O Lord, have I asked of Thee, one thing will I seek: not riches, rank, power, earthly home and happiness, but one ray of that holy light, one spark of that holy fire which will inflame me and plunge me into the fire of Divine Love! Let this sacred fire flame up in me and destroy in me every remnant of sin which defiles my body or soul. Cleanse me in a sevenfold manner with Thy Gifts. Transform me into a holocaust, holy and entirely pleasing to Thee. Inflame me with zeal so that I may live the life and die the death of a repentant sinner, deeply penetrated by Thy Divine Love. Amen.
Hymn to the Holy Spirit
O COME, Creator Spirit, come;
The souls which are Thine own invade;
And with supernal grace inflame
The hearts which Thou Thyself hast made.
O Thou Who art the Comforter,
The Gift of God most high,
The living fount of fire and love,
Celestial unction from above.
O Thou Who art of sevenfold power,
The finger of the Father’s hand,
The fullness of His promised Word,
Who hast all speech at Thy command.
Enkindle light within our minds,
With love our wayward hearts inflame;
And with Thine own undying life,
Give vigor to our mortal frame.
Drive far from us the angry foe,
And Thy true peace impart within,
That, Thou our Leader and our Guide,
We may escape the snares of sin.
Through Thee may we the Father know,
Through Thee approach the Eternal Son,
And Thee, the Spirit of Them both,
Confess while endless ages run.
To God the Father glory be,
And to the Son from death arisen,
And to the blessed Paraclete,
Be praise and ceaseless honor given. Amen.
V. Send forth Thy Spirit and they shall be created.
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.
Let Us Pray …
O God, Who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the gift of the same Spirit we may be always truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
