7 Powerful Psalm Prayers for Protection Against An Enemy

Spiritual warfare is a real thing. It happens every day and all around us. Perhaps the most challenging thing about spiritual warfare is that it is an invisible battle often manifesting itself through people around us.

Contrary to the reality of Church doctrine, Hollywood and modern-day culture would have us believe that the devil is obvious, showing up in our lives wearing red horns and a pitchfork and easy to detect and to avoid. But nothing could not be further from the truth. The devil is invisible, and more often than does not show up himself but rather calls upon either his demonic spiritual cronies or those persons far from God to do his evil bidding. In the twenty-first century, that is a lot of people – especially as more and more people turn farther away from God and His Commands.

Therefore, it is wise to be reminded of what the Bible tells us of our adversary; that he, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8), i.e. someone “far away from God.” This is why we, the People of God, must first believe that spiritual warfare exists (because it does). We must then understand who our enemy is (the devil) and how he operates (through sin, people, and circumstances). Once we stand firm in the teachings of Christ, we must live every day suited-up in the armor of God (Eph. 6:10-18), remain on the lookout, and be always spiritually prepared by walking in a state of sanctifying grace and staying in a state of prayer. Thus, Jesus reminds us in the Gospel of Matthew to ‘watch and pray … the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak’ (Matt. 26:40-43).

So then, if we are to cover ourselves in prayer let us do so powerfully and effectively! We can do this by praying the Psalms. These 7 Powerful Psalm Prayers for Protection Against an Enemy are both powerful and effective. These prayers will not only cover you in battle, but will protect you from any individual(s) trying to hurt you. Whatever you do, do not fear! Through faith, God is always with you.

7 Powerful Psalm Prayers for Protection Against An Enemy

Psalm 54

O God, by your name save me.
    By your strength defend my cause.

O God, hear my prayer.
    Listen to the words of my mouth.

Strangers have risen against me;
    the ruthless seek my life;
    they do not keep God before them.

God is present as my helper;
    the Lord sustains my life.

Turn back the evil upon my foes;
    in your faithfulness, destroy them.

Then I will offer you generous sacrifice
    and give thanks to your name, Lord, for it is good.

Because it has rescued me from every trouble,
    and my eyes look down on my foes.

Psalm 10

Why, Lord, do you stand afar
    and pay no heed in times of trouble?

Arrogant scoundrels pursue the poor;
    they trap them by their cunning schemes.

The wicked even boast of their greed;
    these robbers curse and scorn the Lord.

In their insolence the wicked boast:
    “God does not care; there is no God.”

    Yet their affairs always succeed;
    they ignore your judgment on high;
    they sneer at all who oppose them.

They say in their hearts, “We will never fall;
    never will we see misfortune.”

Their mouths are full of oaths, violence, and lies;
    discord and evil are under their tongues.

They wait in ambush near towns;
    their eyes watch for the helpless
    to murder the innocent in secret.

They lurk in ambush like lions in a thicket,
    hide there to trap the poor,
    snare them and close the net.

The helpless are crushed, laid low;
    they fall into the power of the wicked,

who say in their hearts, “God has forgotten,
    shows no concern, never bothers to look.”

Rise up, Lord! God, lift up your hand!
    Do not forget the poor!

Why should the wicked scorn God,
    say in their hearts, “God does not care”?

But you do see;
    you take note of misery and sorrow;
    you take the matter in hand.
To you the helpless can entrust their cause;
    you are the defender of orphans.

Break the arm of the wicked and depraved;
    make them account for their crimes;
    let none of them survive.

The Lord is king forever;
    the nations have vanished from his land.

You listen, Lord, to the needs of the poor;
    you strengthen their heart and incline your ear.

You win justice for the orphaned and oppressed;
    no one on earth will cause terror again.

Psalm 64

O God, hear my anguished voice;
    from a dreadful foe protect my life.

Hide me from the malicious crowd,
    the mob of evildoers.

They sharpen their tongues like swords,
    bend their bows of poison words.

They shoot at the innocent from ambush,
    they shoot him in a moment and do not fear.

They resolve on their wicked plan;
    they conspire to set snares;
    they say: “Who will see us?”

They devise wicked schemes,
    conceal the schemes they devise;
    the designs of their hearts are hidden.

God shoots an arrow at them;
    in a moment they are struck down.

They are brought down by their own tongues;
    all who see them flee.

Every person fears and proclaims God’s actions,
    they ponder his deeds.

The righteous rejoices and takes refuge in the Lord;
    all the upright give praise.

Psalm 35

Oppose, O Lord, those who oppose me;
    war upon those who make war upon me.

Take up the shield and buckler;
    rise up in my defense.

Brandish lance and battle-ax
    against my pursuers.
Say to my soul,
    “I am your salvation.”

Let those who seek my life
    be put to shame and disgrace.
Let those who plot evil against me
    be turned back and confounded.

Make them like chaff before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord driving them on.

Make their way slippery and dark,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

Without cause they set their snare for me;
    without cause they dug a pit for me.

Let ruin overtake them unawares;
    let the snare they have set catch them;
    let them fall into the pit they have dug.

Then I will rejoice in the Lord,
    exult in God’s salvation.

My very bones shall say,
    “O Lord, who is like you,
Who rescue the afflicted from the powerful,
    the afflicted and needy from the despoiler?”

Malicious witnesses rise up,
    accuse me of things I do not know.

They repay me evil for good;
    my soul is desolate.

Yet I, when they were ill, put on sackcloth,
    afflicted myself with fasting,
    sobbed my prayers upon my bosom.

I went about in grief as for my brother,
    bent in mourning as for my mother.

Yet when I stumbled they gathered with glee,
    gathered against me and I did not know it.
They slandered me without ceasing;

without respect they mocked me,
    gnashed their teeth against me.

O Lord, how long will you look on?
    Restore my soul from their destruction,
    my very life from lions!

Then I will thank you in the great assembly;
    I will praise you before the mighty throng.

Do not let lying foes rejoice over me,
    my undeserved enemies wink knowingly.

They speak no words of peace,
    but against the quiet in the land
    they fashion deceitful speech.

They open wide their mouths against me.
    They say, “Aha! Good!
    Our eyes have seen it!”

You see this, Lord; do not be silent;
    Lord, do not withdraw from me.

Awake, be vigilant in my defense,
    in my cause, my God and my Lord.

Defend me because you are just, Lord;
    my God, do not let them rejoice over me.

Do not let them say in their hearts,
    “Aha! Our soul!”
Do not let them say,
    “We have devoured that one!”

Put to shame and confound
    all who relish my misfortune.
Clothe with shame and disgrace
    those who lord it over me.

But let those who favor my just cause
    shout for joy and be glad.
May they ever say, “Exalted be the Lord
    who delights in the peace of his loyal servant.”

Then my tongue shall recount your justice,
    declare your praise, all the day long.

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and our strength,
    an ever-present help in distress.

Thus we do not fear, though earth be shaken
    and mountains quake to the depths of the sea,

Though its waters rage and foam
    and mountains totter at its surging.

Streams of the river gladden the city of God,
    the holy dwelling of the Most High.

God is in its midst; it shall not be shaken;
    God will help it at break of day.

Though nations rage and kingdoms totter,
    he utters his voice and the earth melts.

The Lord of hosts is with us;
    our stronghold is the God of Jacob.

Come and see the works of the Lord,
    who has done fearsome deeds on earth;

Who stops wars to the ends of the earth,
    breaks the bow, splinters the spear,
    and burns the shields with fire;

“Be still and know that I am God!
    I am exalted among the nations,
    exalted on the earth.”

The Lord of hosts is with us;
    our stronghold is the God of Jacob.

Psalm 18

He reached down from on high and seized me;
    drew me out of the deep waters.

He rescued me from my mighty enemy,
    from foes too powerful for me.

They attacked me on my day of distress,
    but the Lord was my support.

He set me free in the open;
    he rescued me because he loves me.

The Lord acknowledged my righteousness,
    rewarded my clean hands.

For I kept the ways of the Lord;
    I was not disloyal to my God.

For his laws were all before me,
    his decrees I did not cast aside.

I was honest toward him;
    I was on guard against sin.

So the Lord rewarded my righteousness,
    the cleanness of my hands in his sight.

Toward the faithful you are faithful;
    to the honest man you are honest;

Toward the pure, you are pure;
    but to the perverse you are devious.

For humble people you save;
    haughty eyes you bring low.

For you, Lord, give light to my lamp;
    my God brightens my darkness.

With you I can rush an armed band,
    with my God to help I can leap a wall.

God’s way is unerring;
    the Lord’s promise is refined;
    he is a shield for all who take refuge in him.

Truly, who is God except the Lord?
    Who but our God is the rock?

This God who girded me with might,
    kept my way unerring,

Who made my feet like a deer’s,
    and set me on the heights,

Who trained my hands for war,
    my arms to string a bow of bronze.

You have given me your saving shield;
    your right hand has upheld me;
    your favor made me great.

You made room for my steps beneath me;
    my ankles never twisted.

I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
    I did not turn back till I destroyed them.

I decimated them; they could not rise;
    they fell at my feet.

You girded me with valor for war,
    subjugated my opponents beneath me.

You made my foes expose their necks to me;
    those who hated me I silenced.

They cried for help, but no one saved them;
    cried to the Lord but received no answer.

I ground them to dust before the wind;
    I left them like mud in the streets.

You rescued me from the strife of peoples;
    you made me head over nations.
A people I had not known served me;

as soon as they heard of me they obeyed.
Foreigners submitted before me;

foreigners cringed;
    they came cowering from their dungeons.

The Lord lives! Blessed be my rock!
    Exalted be God, my savior!

O God who granted me vengeance,
    made peoples subject to me,

and saved me from my enemies,
Truly you have elevated me above my opponents,
    from a man of lawlessness you have rescued me.

Thus I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
    I will sing praises to your name.

You have given great victories to your king,
    and shown mercy to his anointed,
    to David and his posterity forever.

Psalm 91

You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,
    who abide in the shade of the Almighty,

Say to the Lord, “My refuge and fortress,
    my God in whom I trust.”

He will rescue you from the fowler’s snare,
    from the destroying plague,

He will shelter you with his pinions,
    and under his wings you may take refuge;
    his faithfulness is a protecting shield.

You shall not fear the terror of the night
    nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the pestilence that roams in darkness,
    nor the plague that ravages at noon.

Though a thousand fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    near you it shall not come.

You need simply watch;
    the punishment of the wicked you will see.

Because you have the Lord for your refuge
    and have made the Most High your stronghold,

No evil shall befall you,
    no affliction come near your tent.

For he commands his angels with regard to you,
    to guard you wherever you go.

With their hands they shall support you,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.

You can tread upon the asp and the viper,
    trample the lion and the dragon.

Because he clings to Me I will deliver him;
    because he knows My Name I will set him on high.

He will call upon Me and I will answer;
    I will be with him in distress;
    I will deliver him and give him honor.

With length of days I will satisfy him,
    and fill him with My saving power.
