God Satisfies the Thirsty and Fills the Hungry – Psalm 107:9

For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,
and He has filled the hungry soul with what is good.

Reflection

Human beings need nutrients to survive. We cannot live without food or water for very long. Thankfully, Jesus told us that He is “the bread of life; whoever comes to [Him] shall not hunger and whoever believes in [Him] shall never thirst” (Jn 6:35). We find a similar teaching in the Gospel account of the Last Supper when Jesus institutes Holy Communion. How beautiful and mystifying it is to read the Psalmist prophesying the life-giving truth(s) and teaching of Jesus Christ centuries before His coming.

Just as our bodies have needs and appetites, so do our souls. But our souls require more than physical nourishment. They require spiritual “food and drink.” Soul-filling nutrients here on earth, such as the Word of God, prayer, Church and her sacraments, community etc., are crucial for balance, peace and joy in this life. Think for a moment how easily it is to fill our time with things that do not matter; activities that add nothing to “the big picture” of our lives. Moreover, most of what consumes our time and energy is incapable of truly satisfying us. The immediate sense of gratification doesn’t last and, ultimately, leaves very little room for the One who does. This is not an accident. We have an invisible enemy who thrives on sending us temptations and distractions … anything to keep us away from what will fulfill and save us. Jesus reminds us that all we need is found in Him. But we will have to work tirelessly to stay focused on the ultimate goal.

Our relationship with Jesus Christ and salvation is of utmost importance. By focusing on Him, not only do we arm ourselves in faith but, in doing so, Christ blesses us here and now in our everyday lives. He is the answer to our every need and prayer. When you keep your eyes fixed on Him, He will provide a proverbial feast of life-giving and saving goodness. In Him you will never go hungry or thirsty again; you will never lack any good thing (Ps. 34:10).

Prayer

Lord, when we get hungry for more — for truth and goodness — remind us that it is You we hunger for. Give us the grace to zealously and faithfully seek You, and to fill that longing in our souls with everything spiritually rewarding. We pray, Lord to forever remain loyal to Your Word, teachings and exhortations. Thank You for satisfying our thirsty souls; for filling us with everything eternally beneficial. It is in Your good and Holy Name we pray, Amen.
