Reflection
What was your mood like when you woke up this morning? Were you brimming with joy, or did you find yourself immediately irritated about something? It has been said that life is one long rollercoaster of emotions; a constant sea of up’s and down’s. But did you know that it doesn’t have to be like that? With God, we are given the power over these emotional waves. Like the Apostle Paul, we are able rejoice and be at peace even in the most stressful of times. Our God is the God of restoration; the One who restores our soul in all circumstances. The psalmist reminds us that He continually guides us along the path of righteousness, and while the Lord’s direction works for our benefit … it is all for His eternal glory.
In this world, try as we may, we will not be righteous every step of the way. But for the love of God, we should try our best. Everyday we should be striving to stay as close to God as possible so that, amongst other things, we remain emotionally balanced in mind, body and soul. The overall idea in this verse is that we have a loving friend in Jesus. With our cooperation, He promises to guide us along the path of righteousness — whether that be where we go physically or the attitude with which we are called to deal with different people and situations. Today, don’t be too hard on yourself. If you “woke up on the wrongs side of the bed,” it is okay. Lean on your Shepherd and trust in His ability to restore your soul and guide you forward. In the words of St. Therese of Lisieux, “Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will … being just what God wants [you] to be.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the grace that allows us to be patient, kind and gentle … not only to others but to ourselves as well. We don’t always get it right, but we continue to strive toward the path of righteousness — the path of holiness and blessing that You have set before us. We trust in Your mercy for the times we fall, and Your grace to restore our soul in the process. Please give us the strength and patience for the road ahead today, as well as the humility to give You all glory in victory. It is in Your good and Holy Name we pray, Amen.
