The Afflicted Will Eat and Be Satisfied – Psalm 22:26

The afflicted will eat and be satisfied;
Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
May your heart live forever!

Reflection

Another word for afflicted in Scripture is poor. Hence, this verse can also read: “The poor in spirit (i.e. the humble, afflicted, downtrodden, outcast, etc.) will eat and be satisfied” (Ps. 22:26) … “for,” in Jesus’ own words, “he who is [considered] least among you is the one who is great” (Lk 9:48). The psalmist reminds us in this verse that we receive everything we need in and through the Lord: “Those who seek Him will praise [Him].” Why will we praise Him upon seeking Him? Because the Lord gives us everything we need (see the Our Father Prayer). In fact, He is the only One who can give us everything we need. Similarly, He is the only One who knows everything we need.

Moreover, God loves the humble. He cannot use nor will He bless the proud and arrogant. Those who are prideful trust in themselves and in the world to give them what they (think they) need. On the other hand, however, those “poor in spirit” go directly to the foot of the Cross for all their needs. In their faith and through their humility, they understand that they are not God and, thus, trust in the Lord’s provision. When we trust in the Lord’s provision for our every need, we are promised to be eternally satisfied.

So, do not allow the world to convince you that you do not need God. That you can do it all on your own. You can’t. Human beings have no control over the future because we are not omniscient — we do not know what is going to happen in the future. Instead, trust God, the One who is omniscient. The One Who does know all things, and loves and cares about you above all other things. The Lord knows what you need, and He is the only one who can give it to you. Attend the Lord’s banquet to be fed, and you will “eat and be satisfied” for all of eternity. Thanks be to God!

The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the Lord.
May your heart live forever!”
Psalm 22:26

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for giving us the opportunity to choose fullness of life. Give us the courage and the strength to choose wisely; to resist the temptation of relying on ourselves and on the world for our needs. We desire to praise only You, knowing full well that it is only You who knows all things and, thus, can rightly provide for our real needs, wants and desires. Above all, Father, we desire to desire only what You desire. To you be the glory forever and ever, amen!
