Verse of the Day: Martha Martha, You Are Worried and Anxious About Many Things –Luke 10:41-42

“Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her” –Luke 10:41-42.

While Jesus was in her presence, Martha busied herself cooking, cleaning and serving. She became irritated that her sister Mary who, unlike her, spent the time sitting at His feet “listening to Him speak” (v 39). Martha believed she was doing the right thing — busying herself with the things of this world. Mary, on the other hand, wanted (and chose) only Jesus. Our Lord’s settling conviction? “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her(v 41-42).

We have a choice to make every day of our lives: Busy, hurry and worry ourselves with the things of this world – or, put (and keep) Jesus first above all else. We are told in various passages throughout Scripture that, in order for life to remain balanced, for life to feel good, the latter is the only choice. Jesus alone restores peace and harmony to every area of our lives. Yes, things have to get done of course – bills have to be paid; families cared for. But when God is kept in His rightful order in your life (first!), everything else will fall into its proper place.

As you reflect on the verse of the day today, reflect also on the paramount command of Matthew 6:33: “Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Seek FIRST His Kingdom … and then all these things will be given unto you.
