Ancient and Powerful Prayer to be said Before the Holy Cross of Jesus
It has been said that the Christian sojourning through this world clings to a Crucifix as a soldier on a battlefield clings to his weaponry. Before the foot of the Holy Cross, the Christian man finds his hope, courage, and strength. What to the world appears as a symbol of shame and suffering … is to the Christian the means of redemption and victory.
Christ has overcome the world and the sting of death, but only through suffering and the Cross. Similarly, the Christian will find salvation … but only if he picks up his cross and follows the route of Calvary.
We are told by Christ’s fearless Apostle to “work out [our] own salvation with fear and trembling” (Phil. 2:12) after us being warned to: “Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!” (Matt. 7:13-14)
May the Holy Cross of Christ and this Ancient and Powerful Prayer Before the Holy Cross of Jesus be ever before you – for veneration, adoration, and aid in prayer. And may His Holy Cross serve always as a reminder of God’s unfailing love for you and the pathway in which we are to follow.

Begin by setting yourself reverently in front of a Crucifix, and make the sign of the cross…
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, Amen.
O Adorable Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
Thou has suffered death on the Cross for our sins.
O Holy Cross of Jesus, be my true Light!
O Holy Cross, fill my soul with good thoughts.
O Holy Cross, ward off from me all things that are evil.
O Holy Cross, ward off from me all dangers and deaths
and give me life everlasting!
O Crucified Jesus of Nazareth, have mercy on me now
and forever.
In honor of the Precious Blood of Jesus,
His death, resurrection and ascension which
leads to everlasting life;
True as Jesus was born on Christmas Day;
True as Jesus was crucified on Good Friday;
True as Joseph and Nicodemus took Jesus down
from the Cross and buried Him;
True as Jesus ascended into Heaven;
may He preserve me from my enemies
visible and invisible forever.
O Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me!
Mary and Joseph, pray for me.
Lord Jesus Christ,
through Thy suffering on the Cross,
grant me strength to bear my cross
without fear or dread,
and give me the grace that I may follow Thee.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be world without end. Amen.
